Cooking outside has been around since time immemorial. There is something primal about it. It goes back to our caveman origins—roast mastedon over the open fire. YUM! Although the fire part's the same, little else resembles what our earliest ancestors had to deal with except for maybe the fact that we're still roasting or grilling meat outdoors.
Today, the quality and options available for outdoor cooking are astounding and can range from a well-designed nook for a stand-alone barbecue to a complete outdoor kitchen with cupboards, wine cooler, draft tap, oven, and, one of the hottest new additions to the outdoor kitchen, an outdoor wood-burning pizza oven.
What pizza doesn't taste better infused by the natural flavour of hardwood from a wood-burning pizza oven? But the natural flavour of your wood-burning oven isn't just for pizza. I searched the internet and found wood-burning oven recipes for:
- Roast chicken
- Roast Leg of Lamb
- Roast Turkey—see the video below.
- Wood-roasted lobster
- Wood-roasted monkfish
- A Variety of Vegetables
Outdoor pizza ovens come in a variety of shapes and sizes and price points. There are stand-alone stainless steel versions, kits, and able-to-be-customized clay and brick models.
To me, there's nothing better than enjoying my favourite pizza, cooked in a wood-burning pizza oven, along with a tall lager and a few tall tales, all shared with family and friends. Who, like me, can't wait for the sunny days of summer? Cheers everyone!
