When it comes to decks and fences, the gate can make the difference between OK and GREAT!

"Beware of the person who can't be bothered by details."

William Feather, American Author and Publisher

It's often the little things—the details—that make the difference between an average landscape design and an award-winning landscape design. One such "detail" is the design of your yard's gate.

Not many people—or even designers—pay a lot of attention to something as ordinary as the gate. But I believe it makes a huge difference. Having a run-of-the-mill gate, or worse, one that is simply banal, is like wearing a designer dress with bad shoes—you look great but… . Add the right shoes—shoes that perfectly complement your dress—and suddenly the look is elevated to Hollywood runway. It completes the look. It perfects it. Once you see it nothing less will do.

Paying attention to details like the gate does the same thing for the look of your fence, yard, deck and overall landscape design. The gate should be a perfect complement. It should complete the look. Perfect it. Once you see it in place nothing less should do.

Whether it's your gate or any other complementary design element, creating award-winning landscape designs only happen when, like Mies van deer Rohe, you believe that

"God is in the details"

—Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, German-American Architect
